Brief History

In 1942 Lister Joined 2/7 Aust Independent coy. at Tidal River Vic, and after training took the long rail journey up to Townsville where they were kitted for the jungle and flown out unescorted, flying low above the water, to land at Port Moresby in October the same year. From Moresby they were flown out to Wau and learnt some pidgin; enough to enable them to converse with the locals and chart all the tracks and terrain to Bulolo after gathering information from 2/5, who had been there for some time.  They then moved to  Skindiawai in December then up to the Saddle at Mubo where the enemy were concentrated, mapping tracks and back tracks as they went: completely surrounded by the Japanese. Back to Moresby in May 43 then on to Bena Bena , Goroka and the Ramu Valley until December 1943. Back in Australia for Christmas leave. Then in 1944, at Wondecla on the Atherton Tablelands, the unit (2/7) became part of the senior Regiment of the A.I.F. (2/6 Cavalry Commando Regiment,) as 2/7 Commando Squadron along with the well trained, but less experienced in Jungle Warfare, 2/9 and 2/10 Squadrons. After imparting invaluable  knowledge and skills gained from their earlier expedition against the Japanese, Lister, along with the newly reinforced 2/7,2/9,2/10 squadrons, moved to Townsville and boarded the "Katoomba". In October 1944 the Regiment sailed to Aitape and proceeded with the liberation of P.N.G. at the forefront of the Aitape Wewak Campaign by 6th. Australian Division culminating in the unconditional surrender of the Japanese in August 1945
