Ben wins Historic Inaugural C.O's Award
2009 The Best
2/6 Cavalry (Commando) Regiment Trophy
This trophy, is awarded to the most outstanding scout in the regiment based on the following selection criteria:
Skill at Arms
Fortitude under fatigue deprivation
Ben Kennedy not only excelled in these attributes and was judged by his superiors, but had the approval of his peers and was judged by them as a most worthy and popular choice.
The NSW branch of the 2/6 Cavalry Commando Association charged Shorty with the task of contributing the supporting monetary reward on behalf of their President Ron Scott and Secretary Ted Workman and the members.
I have no new words, so I will give you the thoughts of a long forgotten soldier. These words I give you Ben as appropriate for the occasion, and befitting your achievement. Well may you use them in the future for one day your son will ask the inevitable questions, as the sons of soldiers must do,and you will tell him:
"I WAS THAT WHICH OTHERS CARED NOT TO BE. I WENT WHERE OTHERS FEARED TO TREAD AND DID WHAT OTHERS FAILED TO DO. I ASKED NOTHING FROM THOSE WHO GAVE NOTHING, AND ACCEPTED THE THOUGHT OF LONELINESS OR DEATH SHOULD I FAIL. I HAVE SEEN THE FOG OF WAR, THE FACE OF BATTLE, FELT THE CHILL OF FEAR, THE SPIRIT OF VICTORY, THE PAIN OF DEFEAT. I HAVE WARMED TO LOVE, AND IN A MOMENT OF TERROR I HAVE EXCHANGED A FLEETING GLANCE THAT SAID IF WE ARE TO DIE WE’LL DIE TOGETHER, NOW I LOVE YOU MY BROTHERS TO THE GRAVE AND BEYOND AND A BOND IS FORGED THAT ONLY A COMBAT SOLDIER KNOWS. I CRIED AT THE LOSS OF A COMRADE. I LIVED IN TIMES OTHERS WOULD SAY BEST FORGOTTEN. HOWEVER, AT THE VERY LEAST, IN LATER DAYS, I WILL BE ABLE TO SAY WITH THE GREATEST OF PRIDE, THAT I INDEED WAS A SOLDIER. NOT ONLY THAT, I WAS A CAVALRYMAN, AND, IN THE YEAR 2009, I WAS DECLARED THE BEST."
Congratulations Ben, please allow me the honour of your hand.
Shake and hand over $1000.00.
Please accept this well deserved tribute from the NSW Branch of the 2/6 Cavalry Commando Regiment National Association.
